Hutterite History Overview

Jacob Wiedemann was one of the church leaders in 1528, when the communal way of life restarted in Europe.

Jacob Wiedemann, who was also known as one-eyed Jakob, came to Nikolsburg from around Enns River in 1526.

In 1528, when the Lords von Liechtenstein were under pressure and threats that force would be used against them if they continued to harbour Anabaptists, the group of Anabaptists split into two groups. One of the groups was led by Wiedemann. Wiedemann group believe in non-resistance, and hence they became known as Stäbler or Stickbearers, because they said they would pick up the their walking stick and leave.

The other group, under the leadership of Dr. Bathurer Habneier, promised the lords to help even with a sword; they became known as Schwertler or Swordbearers.

Under his direction, community of goods was reestablished.

Later Wiedeman worked with Jacob Hutter as a minister and early organizer of the Hutterian Church.
